2022 Florida Government Week

For Florida’s Government Week, City of Hawthorne Commission and staff welcomed the local schools to City Hall to learn more about their City and municipal government.

The 5th graders of Shell Elementary School plus the school’s Safety Patrol were the first to visit with Ms. Shakenya Ivey as their teacher-in-charge. The entire class voted for their honorary Commission and honorary City Staff with the following students in the winning seats: Mayor Omari, Vice Mayor Jennifer, Commissioner Brooke, Commissioner Aaron, Commissioner Matias, City Manager Lilly, City Attorney Garren, and City Clerk Raejon.

Hawthorne High School’s Striving to Achieve Real (STARSS) Success Society were the next visitors with teacher-in-charge, Ms. Alta Johnson. The students voted for their honorary Commission and honorary City Staff with the following students in the winning seats: Mayor Jaz, Vice Mayor Kamiah, Commissioner Samantha, Commissioner G’mon, Commissioner Darian, City Manager Lakijah, City Attorney CJ, and City Clerk Zion.

Both groups of students participated in a mock election allowing them to choose between having a public pool and public skate park in Hawthorne. The public pool had the landslide majority vote from the 5th graders AND the high schoolers. In addition to the mock election, students participated in a mock Commission meeting and the honorary Commission and City Staff were asked questions by the rest of the students acting as concerned citizens with fielded topics from waterline construction to street potholes.

The students were able to meet and greet the City Commission (Mayor Jacquelyn Randall, Vice Mayor Patricia Bouie-Hutchinson) and City Staff (City Manager Wendy Sapp, City Clerk LaKesha McGruder, Utility Billing Clerk Denise Johnson, Administrative Assistant Rei Hulse, Finance Clerk Louie Pronstroller).

We look forward to celebrating future Florida Government Weeks with the local school and community!
